Community Programmes

Creative Learning team has acquired a reputation for delivering a successful and engaging arts programme and is particularly strong in the development of partnership work.

We operate as a cultural resource for South Lakeland, offering a service to formal and informal education providers through our centre-based and outreach programme.

We have worked alongside arts organisations, local authority youth organisations, children’s services, charities as well as health and social services.

Some community programmes we have delivered include:

  • Annual Schools’ Dance Platform. Hundreds of children from across South Lakeland perform on our stage for Brewery Arts Schools Dance Platform. We have hosted this special event for many years and have seen thousands of young creatives take part. Our team is committed to working with creative young people to help them fulfil their potential. Brewery Arts’ Schools Dance Platform is a non-competitive and inclusive celebration of dance, featuring pieces created by local Primary, Secondary and SEN schools, in addition to Brewery Youth Dance groups. The event is part of U.Dance, a national programme providing performance opportunities for young people. Brewery Youth Dance groups performed new pieces, including a dance created for the regional U.Dance festival hosted by The Lowry.

  • Creative Connections (funded through Sir John Fisher Foundation). Our work with vulnerable adults involves workshops with local and national arts practitioners in music, dance and visual arts. The project involved the group taking part in music, visual art, and drama sessions with freelance practitioners as well as working on a showcase piece with Emily Davies, Brewery Art’s Engagement Officer for Dance. The project culminated in two celebratory performances, one at Brewery Arts and one at Mill Lane. During these performances, the group rehearsed and showcased a short dance piece in front of small audiences.

  • ‘Moving With’ is a community dance project led by local dance artist Lucy Nicholson, alongside filmmaker Jonny Randall.
Brewery Arts assisted Lucy in hosting a series of workshops in schools across Cumbria, which aim to acknowledge the power and grace in playful movement to love, appreciate, and experience the natural world without challenge. Funded by the Dance Consortia North West 2022 Research Programme, and with support from Brewery Arts, the workshops invited local school pupils to view and discuss the film, before heading to an outdoor space to participate in a dance activity inspired by the Moving With content and concept; a celebration of the simple things, being together, moving together, listening, and watching
