Introduction to a highly versatile printmaking technique where collage plates are built up to create expressive and dynamic surfaces. These can be printed in a variety of ways and combined with other print disciplines to create unique prints.
What will the class cover and how will it be taught?
Collogragh is an experimental medium. Students will be encouraged to work freely, making a range of plates using different techniques, often more than one at a time. This is a sculptural approach to printmaking using texture and embossing. This process also gives lots of scope for exploring colour.
This will be a highly practical course focused on making and printing, but you will also be introduced to the work of different artists working in print and be encouraged to research your own areas of interest and carry on projects at home as well as in class.
Complete newcomers to the print room will learn to use a range of materials and equipment safely and be encouraged to develop skills to carry on printing at home or using the Brewery’s open access opportunities.
Who is it suitable for?
The class is suitable for absolute beginners and also those with some experience who want to consolidate the basics.
Important information
Although the majority of materials used will be non-toxic (We will use linseed oil-based inks, for example) printmaking does occasionally require processes which require more care, and participants will be made fully aware when this is the case.
There are no sessions 1 May and 5 June.
What do I need to bring?
Apron and thin plastic gloves, basic drawing materials, a scalpel and extra blades (ideally Swan Morton size 11 and 10A), A3 stetch book
Are there any additional costs?
Most resources are provided, but there will be a charge for additional (Bockingford/ Fabrano Unica) printing paper
Tutor Information
Caroline Stow is a printmaker whose work is rooted in an interest in ecology, environment, and health. She is particularly interested in making as an explorative process, which melds together materiality and slow thinking. Caroline hones in on the positive, restorative, and nurturing effects of creativity. In her work, she uses printmaking (etching, etched lino, monoprint and collagraph) to make and remake images. This then evokes the forming and dissolving of connections over time. As well as exhibiting widely, she is is currently teaching at Iron Press studios in Lancaster and running workshops at Rookhow in the Rusland valley, as well as the Brewery. Caroline has over 30 years of experience working with adults in Further, Higher, Adult and Community Education.
