Introduction to Portrait Drawing | 20 Sep-6 Dec | Fridays 10.30am-1pm | £180 (10 weeks) | 16+yrs | Studio Three | Tutor Catherine MacDiarmid
Portraiture is the perfect discipline to help improve your drawing skills. This course will provide an opportunity for people of all abilities to develop the portrait, from basic observation of proportion through to building structure and form. There will be a live sitter each week.
What will the course or workshop cover and how will it be taught?
This course will be taught working with a live sitter. Through a series of enjoyable exercises, you will gain confidence in your portrait drawing skills, improve your ability to capture a likeness and develop ideas of what makes a good portrait. Different drawing techniques and processes will be explored with the opportunity to personalise your practice throughout the course.
This course will be taught through a series of demonstrations and practical activities and tasks. You will look at other artists’ portraits, the work of your peers, and have one-to-one time with the tutor to nurture your technique and your individual style.
Important Information
There are no classes during the weeks beginning 28th October (half term) and 18th November (Kendal Mountain Festival).
What do I need to bring with me?
- Drawing boards and easels will be provided.
- To the first session please bring:-
- A3 sketchbook.
- Soft lead pencils/graphite sticks.
- Willow charcoal.
- Putty rubber.
- Tape or clips to attach paper to a drawing board.
You will be asked to bring other art materials along as and when necessary.
When using art materials your clothes could potentially get dirty so you may wish to dress accordingly.

About the tutor
Catherine MacDiarmid has 29 years’ experience teaching a range of art classes and applying her knowledge as practicing artist to her role as a Tutor. She exhibits widely, including exhibiting in the BP Portrait in 2001/2, New Light Art Tour 2021/22 and 2023/24 (of outstanding Northern based Artists) and regularly at the Mall Galleries. Catherine has won many awards for her art, most recently being the Watercolour Materials Award in the Jacksons Painting Prize 2023. She is an elected member of The Lakes Artists Society, the Contemporary British Portrait Painters and appeared in Sky Portrait Artists of the Year 2014, 2018 reaching the semi-finals in 2019. As well as completing private portrait commissions her work is collected internationally and she works from her home-studio in Kendal.
