About our guest
How do we heal when we are in crisis? In his second poetry collection Solastalgia, Irish poet Ciarán Hodgers explores the intersection of mental health and the natural world; what it means and how it feels to seek out be1tter states of being, both individually and as part of a living ecology.
These poems ask what trees can teach us about grief; considers evolutionary biology as a metaphor for the counselling process; how autumn can encourage us to let go; what a mountain has to say about trauma and how an extinct bird might help us feel more at home in our bodies. Seeking beyond history and colonialism, this collection urges us to find deeper connections to our individual and cultural selves as a gateway for nurturing reciprocity with the wider world.
Blending the personal and the collective, Solastalgia describes not only the present climate crisis, but asks how we got here, what deep work we might need to do to begin overcoming it and what possibilities await us if we can.
Celebrating the resilience, tenderness and connection between the human and the more-than-human worlds, this collection holds space for the deep resonance felt with and in nature today. It challenges us to think of a way through the immediate and galvanise us toward action against our personal and political obstacles.
