An opportunity for those with some drawing experience to develop their portraiture skills. You will be guided through the production of a series of portraits. This can be drawn and/or painted, exploring different approaches in order to develop your current practice. Attention will be paid to composition and developing beyond your current level. There will be a portrait model each week.

What will the course cover and how will it be taught?

This course will be taught working with a live sitter and through a series of portrait tasks exploring observation techniques and the application of your chosen art materials. You will gain confidence in your portrait drawing/painting skills, together with improving your ability to capture a likeness and develop ideas of what makes a good portrait. Some different techniques and processes will be explored with the opportunity to personalise your practice throughout the course and work towards a longer portrait composition.

This course will be taught through a series of demonstrations and practical activities, as well as tasks. Looking at other artists’ portraits, the work of peers, and having one-to-one time with the tutor will facilitate your individual learning so you achieve on this course.

Who is it suitable for?

Suitable for complete beginners as well as those with experience as Catherine can tailor the session to meet individual needs.

There are no sessions during 26 – 30 May

What do I need to bring with me?

Drawing boards and easels will be provided.
We will be drawing in the first session so can you please bring:-

  1. A3 sketchbook.
  2. Willow charcoal.
  3. Putty rubber.
  4. Tape or clips to attach paper to a drawing board.

You will be asked to bring other art materials along as and when necessary.

When using art materials your clothes could potentially get dirty so you may wish to dress accordingly.

About the tutor

Catherine MacDiarmid has 29 years’ experience teaching a range of art classes and applying her knowledge as a practising artist to her role as a Tutor. She exhibits widely, including exhibiting in the BP Portrait in 2001/2, New Light Art Tour 2021/22 and 2023/24 (of outstanding Northern based Artists) and regularly at the Mall Galleries. Catherine has won many awards for her art, most recently being the Watercolour Materials Award in the Jacksons Painting Prize 2023. She is an elected member of The Lakes Artists Society, the Contemporary British Portrait Painters and appeared in Sky Portrait Artists of the Year 2014, 2018 reaching the semi-finals in 2019. As well as completing private portrait commissions her work is collected internationally, and she works from her home-studio in Kendal.
