Begin to Draw a Portrait | Sat 27 Jan | 11am-5pm | £50| 16+ yrs | Tutor Catherine MacDiarmid | Studio 3

Take your portrait drawing skills to another level with this intensive workshop covering observational skills, measuring techniques and mark-making and tone. A portrait sitter will be present throughout the day.

What will the course cover and how will it be taught?

A fantastic opportunity to complete a portrait from life in one day. During the workshop you will be guided through some quick drawing exercises to help with basic measuring and observation skills using graphite/pencil and charcoal.  This will be followed by a 2-hour long portrait from a sitter where expert advice and guidance will be tailored to individual needs.  Choice of media, techniques and process will be personal for the long pose, with the premise of pushing your portrait to a level that you have never achieved be a choice of, either in likeness, detail, tone, colour and / or texture.

Through a combination of practical work, tutor demonstration and group discussion, you will:-

1)  Expand mark making with a variety of drawing media.
2)  Practice and develop measuring techniques within portrait drawing.
3)  Develop the representation of tone and structure.
4)  Appreciate life work by some other portrait artists

What do I need to bring with me?

  • A3 cartridge/drawing paper
  • 2 x sheets toned paper (pale grey or pale brown sugar paper will do)
  • willow charcoal
  • putty rubber
