This course will explore fundamental principles of creative writing for prose. Students will use prompts to write short stories and share in the feedback process.

What will the class cover and how will it be taught?

Across ten weeks this class will explore different techniques of storytelling and prose writing suitable for long and short stories. Sessions will typically begin with free-writing before examining core elements of character, narrative, voice, place and story structure. Every two weeks students will complete homework of writing a short story, which we’ll then read and share in class. This course will use writing exercises to develop a strong voice and foster creative thinking; depending on the interests of individual students, the class will also explore additional ideas around publication, performance, networking and sustaining a writing practice.
