This course explores fiction writing for short stories, novels and flash fiction. Students will use prompts to write scenes exploring a range of topics, then share in the feedback process to reflect on their own work and develop a voice as a writer.

What will the class cover and how will it be taught?

Across ten weeks this class explores different techniques of storytelling and prose writing suitable for long and short stories. Sessions will typically begin with free-writing and word games before examining core elements such as character, narrative, voice and prose. Week by week students will share their work and engage in peer feedback sessions to reflect on the writing process. Taken together these writing exercises aim to develop a strong voice and foster creative thinking. Depending on the interests of individual students, the class will also explore additional ideas around publication, performance, networking and sustaining a writing practice.
