In Real Life: Storying A Walk | 12 Oct | 12-4pm | £60 | 16+yrs | Tutor Jess Emsley | Print Room and Studio 3

These monthly workshops are an antidote to the digital world, immersing you in the process and craft of sensual textured art-forms, engaging fully with the physical world to create a unique piece of work. All levels of experience welcome. Throw away your phone, slow down, be present and make something new.

This indoor and outdoor art workshop is all about being inquisitive with the senses and slowing down to engage with the world around us. Over the course of the workshop, we’ll explore the area of Serpentine Woods through sensory drawing to create illustrated narrative sketchbooks.

The workshop will begin in the Brewery studios, with the making of our own sketchbooks using simple book binding. Once on the walk, we’ll send our gaze outwards as we begin to sketch and make creative observations, before gradually bringing our focus closer and seeing what it is we notice in this familiar landscape. Following the walk, we’ll return to Brewery Arts to review our drawings and develop these further in the studio over a hot drink.

What will the workshop cover and how will it be taught?

We will make our own sketchbooks using simple bookbinding techniques and we will fill these sketchbooks with a variety of drawings over the course of a walk. Whilst the workshop focuses on drawing, the instruction acts more as invitation and there is no pressure to make anything finished or resolved. Instead, there is a focus on experience and fostering a receptivity to the world around us.

After making their sketchbooks in the studio, participants will be guided on a walk through Serpentine Woods in which different drawing activities are introduced. This walk will take the structure of alternating periods of walking, with short moments of drawing.

Following the walk, we will return to the studio to develop our drawings further over a hot drink before rounding off the workshop and reflecting on our experiences.

Who is it suitable for?

Anyone with an interest in walking & art. All levels of skill are welcome. We will be outside in woody terrain and an appropriate level of fitness is required; we will be covering a short distance and walking slowly, however it is a little hilly and uneven underfoot in the woods. Unfortunately, this means the event cannot be wheelchair accessible. It is down to individuals’ own decision as to their ability to participate; any questions are welcome.

What do I need to bring with me?

Wear appropriate clothing and footwear for being outside (waterproofs and gloves are recommended).

Are there any additional costs?

No.

About the tutor:

Jessica Emsley is an artist, researcher, mountain leader, and advocate for engagement with the outdoors through creativity. Jessica is currently undertaking a PhD in Fine Art exploring walking-based art practice as a potential remedy to human-nature separation, inviting more-than-human experience. Informed by this research, Jessica facilitates outdoor art walks and workshops, with a focus on fostering a receptivity to ‘nature’ or the more-than-human, often through experimental and sensory drawing practices.
