Mr. Burton tells the true story of the relationship between Port Talbot schoolmaster Philip Burton and Richard Jenkins, both a wild young schoolboy and the son of a wayward drunk. Richard dreamed of becoming an actor, but his ambitions were in danger of being derailed. This is because of a combination of family trouble, the pressure of war, and his own lack of discipline. Mr. Burton recognized the raw talent in his pupil, becoming his tutor, strict taskmaster and eventually his adoptive father.
“Jones certainly shows Mr Burton’s sad and dignified loneliness.” The Guardian
“The dynamic between Jones and Lawtey is at the heart of this narrative” ScreenDaily
“In its own way, “Mr. Burton” is an ode to the kind of stiff-upper-lipped emotional reticence that was once the default form of expression in British cinema” Variety
“Jones is on top form here, projecting an interiorised melancholy that seeps into his eyes.” The Arts Desk
“This is an uplifting story of an inspirational, avuncular teacher and a gobby but bright pupil, who, after he is punished by being told to learn the prologue to Shakespeare’s Henry V, reports back that it didn’t seem like a punishment at all. He loved it.” The Daily Mail
