Renowned for his dynamic storytelling and genre-blending approach to jazz, Yorkshire-born, Amsterdam-based saxophonist Sam Newbould brings his celebrated quintet to Brewery Arts for the first time. The performance marks the release of their critically acclaimed third album, Homing (ZenneZ Records).

Although Newbould has lived in Amsterdam for nearly a decade, this UK tour feels like a personal homecoming. “I’m so excited to return to my native UK,” he says. “We last toured there in 2023 and had an amazing time playing for fantastic audiences. This time is extra special because we’ll be performing in Kendal and Bradford for the first time – both just a stone’s throw from where I grew up in the Yorkshire Dales. There’s a strong homecoming feeling to this tour, and we can’t wait to share our music with UK audiences.”

The album takes inspiration from an unexpected encounter with a Polish homing pigeon, reflecting Newbould’s thoughts on belonging while living abroad. “Unlike the homing pigeon, my sense of home isn’t tied to a place anymore. Instead, it’s about relationships, experiences, and moments. That’s what this album – and this tour – is all about.”

Newbould’s live performances blend music and storytelling with humour, introspection, and explosive musicianship. “There’s an energy and joy in our performances that we hope everyone can enjoy – whether they’re jazz fans or not. The songs are catchy, foot-tapping, but also sometimes dark and emotional. Expect spectacular solos, infectious grooves, and a few unexpected twists.”

Featuring some of Europe’s finest jazz musicians – Bernard van Rossum (tenor sax), Xavi Torres (piano), Jort Terwijn (bass), and Guy Salamon (drums) – this is a rare chance to see an internationally celebrated quintet up close in Kendal.

Opening for the Sam Newbould Quintet tonight is Dobbö, aka Issac Dobson, known to regular Brewery Arts gig-goers as member of one of our favourite local bands, Vacant Weekend, who have played here numerous times and are also featured in this year’s Summer Sundays. Now based and studying music in Manchester, Vacant Weekend all met and became great friends in Kendal, and are ones to watch!

“A pearl in the jazz catch of the day” – NRC (NL)
“An inspired and immersive narrative, sincerely relayed and exquisitely performed” – UK Vibe (UK)
“Newbould’s lyrical qualities in particular make the compositions of his quintet so strong” – Volkskrant (NL)
“The group dynamic is masterful and its inherent charm is thickly underlined on every arrangement. Chapeau!” – Jazzism (NL)
