Smoove & Turrell formed in the post-millennium North East of England, bringing together a group of working-class musicians united by a love for soul. After meeting keyboardist Mike Porter, Smoove discovered singer John Turrell practising with a local band. The trio quickly bonded, leading to the creation of their debut hit “I Can’t Give You Up,” which became a sensation in the Northern Soul scene.
The success of their first few tracks prompted the formation of a full live band, and their debut album Antique Soul received critical acclaim. Championed by Craig Charles on BBC’s Funk & Soul Show, the band gained national radio attention and secured multiple features on Radio 2 and 6 Music.
With albums like Crown Posada and Stratos Bleu, they expanded their sound, incorporating funk, electronica, and jazz elements while staying true to their Northern roots. Their powerful lyrics reflect the highs and lows of life in the North East, touching on themes of social inequality and resilience.
Their music has been featured on TV shows, films, and even video games, and the band continues to grow their fanbase through relentless touring and engaging performances. Now with seven albums, including the recent Red Ellen (2023), Smoove & Turrell remains a vital force in the modern soul scene, blending gritty realism with dancefloor energy.
Support comes from The Funk Philosopher – a DJ with a love of all things funky!
