Participants across all levels of musical experience are welcome to join this course. No instrumental ability is required, but there will be opportunities to play songs written during the sessions. Storytelling In Song is a course for anyone who would like to explore lyric-driven songwriting and develop skills and confidence to tell stories that matter to you through song.
What will the class cover and how will it be taught?
Classes will combine music appreciation, singing, and lyric writing to explore a range of styles and subjects. There will be group discussions and both group and individual writing activities.
Sessions will be structured around a theme, from narrative folk songs, journeys and ‘forgotten’ women of folk, to coming of age, and songs of resistance. Each session will use an exploration of an existing song (some well-known, others less so) as a jumping-off point to develop new creative ideas.
Who is it suitable for?
Anyone aged 16+ who would like to explore lyric-driven songwriting and develop skills and confidence to tell stories that matter to you through song.
